Folsom Street Fair is an annual BDSM and leather subculture street fair that hosts a unique display of characters and exhibitionist events — and you’ve probably never seen, or experienced, anything like it before.

If you didn’t get a chance to make it out this year, immerse yourself in these amazing photos by Akshay Sawhney, a San Francisco-based photographer, to get a little taste of how things went down.

Sawhney said his inspiration has always been to capture interesting people in simple ways. For the Folsom Street Fair, he wanted to isolate attendees from their crazy environment, and to let them stand for who they are without context.

"This year, in an effort to capture the stars of the show, I chose to isolate my subjects from the very environment that provided their inspiration and energy. I set up a backdrop on Folsom Street, and much like Richard Avedon, hoped that the thrill of the individual's personalities would come through and stand alone without distraction. I hope that like me, you find that it did," said Sawhney.

Akshay is a photographer based in San Francisco, CA. He was born in Iran to Indian parents, but grew up in New York & Pennsylvania where he spent many years working in photojournalism under Associated Press guidance, and was lucky enough to win a few awards.  Today he travels the world to work with select clients to capture their weddings & events.
