It's the last few days for the last of its kind.

A Different Light Bookstore, the last of a once-proud family of gay literary spots and a beacon of homosexual life in the Castro, will be out of business by the end of the month.

The window displays have for-lease and half-off signs, but there isn't much to take half off of. The back shelves are bare, and the front shelves are scattered with books and porn.

Castro San Francisco residents have a new veggie burger to enjoy and worth every penny. DeborahL tells us that Greenburger's, a new spot in the Lower Haight which is close enough for us in the Castro District, offers an outstanding house-made veggie burger made of "organic black beans, beets, oats, brown rice, and spices and served on a brioche roll." She also liked the fixings bar (with house-made pickles) and the airy, homey space decorated with family photos. My Castro San Francisco can appreciate a fixings bar and a nice pickle! Those living in the heart of Castro feel the same.

Some sad news from the Castro San Francisco. Bagdad Cafe closed suddenly over the weekend with the turn of the calendar. Castro residents are still in mourning. Turns out the lease was up, and according to the departing folks at Bagdad Cafe, new tenants have already taken over. No more Angus Burger 3 a.m. Castro.

However, My Castro San Francisco brings some good news. It doesn't look like it will stay dark for long. A sign in the window in the window indicates that the new owners will reopen the space in May. No word yet on whether or not the new regime will keep the name, concept or hours. All of us in the heart of the Castro can only hope they do!

It took a gay village to bring Britney Spears to San Francisco, starting with mayoral candidate Bevan Dufty and extending to bar owners, drag queens, and cheerleaders.

The saga started with Mark Robertson, a producer at ABC's Good Morning America and a longtime friend of Dufty's. In late 2010, Dufty said, Robertson called him to propose shooting a Britney Spears promotional video in the Castro.

Looks like Britney Spears won't be playing the Castro after all, y'all.

Castro San Francisco officials, concerned about the prospects of bad weather, have nixed plans to have Spears perform at noon Sunday in front of the Castro District Theatre, as part of a "Good Morning America" segment to air Tuesday.

Jive Records, Spears' label, said Wednesday that Spears will now perform noon Sunday at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. The show will still be free, but tickets will be required for entrance. Tickets become available 10:30 a.m. Thursday at www.abcnews.com/gma. It was not known how many tickets will be available. You'll need a printed receipt to get into the show.

In Chinatown, it may be the Year of the Tiger, but in the Castro, it's almost always the Year of the Cock. Judging from a walk down Castro Street, cocks are the unofficial mascot. You've got the Sausage Factory (an Italian restaurant named with a wink), Hot Cookie (a bakery that sells chocolate-covered cookie cocks), and Rock Hard (a porn shop full of gigantic, X-rated cocks). To cap it off, the Castro just elected a supervisor named Scott Wiener.

But this year, the Castro District gay neighborhood home to found out that the male anatomy can still cause a stir when the real-life cocks arrived. In broad daylight. At the plaza on the corner of Market Street, right by the F-line trolley stop. Sometimes flapping down Castro Street. Or hanging out in line for coffee at Starbucks.
