Not that you need for us to tell you this, you could look it up on the calendar or see the change in the leaves—autumn is in full swing and we cannot get enough of it!
The Castro’s big fall fete, the Castro Street Fair, may have already come and gone. But there is still plenty of festive things bouncing about during the month of October.
Here’s a look at just a few ways to soak up the season out and about in the neighborhood.
Savor The Flavors: MyCastro.com is furthering its café obsession this season, because all of our favorite places are offering delicious autumn treats to get you in the spirit. Skip the usual specialty buys at Starbucks and dig into what the neighborhood has to offer. Hop on over to Thorough Bread and Pastry for a caramel chocolate tart that screams “fall!” or meander to Bi-Rite where they are recommending you dig into apricot galette complimented with a scoop of ginger ice cream, (and PS it has been hot as heck outside, so grab yourself some soft serve before that fog rolls back in!) And of course, there is the pumpkin spice coffee from Castro Coffee Company, which has garnered such a following that you can purchase it on the businesses website year-round.
Take A Trek: Castro Merchants always has the best deals in town. For October, they are offering $5 off the Historical Castro Walking Tour. They really couldn’t have picked a better time of year to offer the discount either; this is when the city gets its “summer weather” anyways.
Catch A Flick…: Of course, with All Hallows Eve just a few weeks away, there is no better time to watch a re-screening of some of your favorite scary movies. The Castro Theater has a number of good views playing right up until October 31st. (Check out the MyCastro guide for more info!)
… Or a Good Show: Headed out of the neighborhood for the evening and still want to make festive plans? Perhaps a night of drag fits the bill? We’re excited about many wonderful shows around the city this month, one of which is Dragula at The Eagle. On October 18th hosts the Boulet Brothers and Heklina will be presenting Demented Disney, which in addition to the leather-y lusciousness of is boasting a midnight drag fashion show. And while we’re on the subject of dressing up…
Costume Call: We know we know, the Castro doesn’t have its crazy Halloween blowout anymore. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still do all of your shopping there before hitting up the rest of San Francisco, right? Suit yourself without breaking the bank by heading over to Out of the Closet on Church Street. Grab your accessories at Cliff’s Variety—heck, you buy pieces for three of four different costumes, because Cliff’s basically has everything. Or perhaps you’re planning on suiting yourself in nothing more than a pair of skivvies and some animal ears, in which case you should pop into Outfit for some sparkly undies, and maybe even a pair of suspenders.
Remember to visit MyCastro.com throughout the month as we find you more fall-friendly things to take in!
