Gyms

1. Fitness SF — 2301 Market St
Fitness is two stories and 16,000 square feet of workout magic. They’ve got a huge array of cardio machines including treadmills, bikes and ellipticals with personal viewing screens, and a wide selection of weight training machines, free weights and barbells to match any intensity. great thing about Fitness SF is that it’s not just a gym, it’s a community. "love Fitness SF! I've been a member for over a decade, and while I used to workout at the SOMA location, I am now exclusively going to the Castro gym. I enjoy the camaraderie of the Castro location. It's very much a neighborhood gym, so I always see friends and acquaintances working out regardless of the time of day I am there," said Yelper Lisa S. from San Francisco. www.fitnesssf.com

2. 24 Hour Fitness — 2145 Market St
Not only is this 24 Fitness clean and spacious, it has a great collection of machines, a lovely view of the famous Market Street and some of the best group fitness trainers around. Yelper Ryan L. from San Francisco rates the 24 Hour Fitness in the Castro in beer terms: "The Ocean 24 Hour Fitness is a Bud Light: It looks like all the rest from the outside... but once you get in you notice that it’s dead on the inside. Hasn't been updated in years, stale, stinks and although you're putting in the same amount of effort (gulp, gulp!) it is less effective (4% ABV?). The Castro 24 Hour Fitness is an ice-cold Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA: May look the same on the outside but once you get into it you feel the love. It’s clean, smooth and plenty effective given the effort (15-20% ABV?)." 24hourfitness.com

3. Alex Fitness — 2275 Market St
Alex Fitness is the fit-tastic collaboration between two men named Alex — Alexei Kovalev and Alexander Shulatnikov (Shula). "place is absolutely perfect. One of the best-kept secrets in the Castro. It's in the same building at Books Inc, Dinosaur and Sushi Underground. Everything is brand new, including the locker space and all the equipment. The place feels like one of those high-end gyms you see on TV where trainers are actually happy to help. Alex is the owner, super nice guy. I highly recommend it," said Francois C. http://alexfitness-sf.com/

Yoga

4. Bikram Yoga Castro — 301 Eureka St
If you’re one of those who like it hot (because you know, some do), then head over to Bikram Yoga Studio in the Castro for some 95-105 degree fun. Practice the 26 classic yoga poses (asanas) with instructor LaMott Atkins for 90 minutes and you’ll swear you’ve never felt so good. (Just be sure to hydrate!) 5. Integral Yoga Institute — 770 Dolores St
Integral Yoga Institute offers classical Hatha Yoga instruction daily. They also have free meditations, kirtans(chanting), and a variety of special and workshops. "found IYI a few months ago and I am so happy to have such a beautiful place to practice! Like other reviewers have said, this feels like real yoga; it’s like the yoga I practiced in India. I love that it's in a beautiful old Victorian home, and that it's an actual ashram, not a sleek fancy studio with mirrors everywhere. I love practicing in an old house, with tall ceilings, airy windows, gorgeous molding and a really neat turret. The community at IYI is really welcoming, friendly and non-judgmental. They offer a great range of classes, as well as meditation, vegetarian lunches, kirtan, movie night, workshops, etc. I love that the classes always include chanting, meditation, yoga nidra, and pranayama. It's such a great unique spot — check it out!" said Yelper Katie H. from San Francisco, CA. integralyogasf.org

6. Yoga Tree Castro — 97 Collingwood St
There are Yoga Tree Studio sprinkled all about the Bay Area, but the one in the Castro is a local favorite. "This is one of the best studios I have visited. The space is large and the shrine at the front of the room is beautifully illuminated. The only instructor I have taken here is Les and he is so good that I have not strayed. He offers some extremely challenging poses for those yoga masters as well as alternative for the not-so-advanced yogis. He starts off the practice with a melodic chant and always has nice things to say at closing," said Yelper Molly M. from Lafayette, CA. http://www.yogatreesf.com/locations/castro.html
