About the Castro District, San Francisco
The Castro District is San Francisco's gay neighborhood and home to its GLBT community. The Castro is constantly pulsing with energy acting as a meeting place for all things diverse, and of course the Castro is, "the" spot for leisure time San Francisco gay activities and events. Not to mention Castro Street Fair and the annual SF PRIDE celebration festivities happen here each year.
Twin Peaks bar, the first gay bar in San Francisco to have windows greets most first time visitors and locals alike directly on Market Street welcoming all. What used to be the intersection for the gay rights movement, today gives way to community and a feeling of home instigated by its proactive GLBT residents. On any given day, you can walk this intersection and be a part of history while "Gays" can be seen teaming out of every retail store, bar, dance club, and restaurant for blocks. Additionally, the world famous Castro Theatre can be seen illuminating Castro Street signaling to any unaware traveler you are in fact in the gayest neighborhood in the world.
The main intersection in the Castro is 18th Street and Castro Street. From here the Castro District extends in all directions for many blocks. This dynamic San Francisco neighborhood is adorned with rainbow flags to help show support of the gay and lesbian residents while being a symbol for the community. In addition Harvey Milk Plaza celebrating the civil rights and GLBT leader can be found at the intersection of Market and Castro Streets near the F-Streetcar turnaround, must see landmarks when in the Castro.
While the Castro façade has changed many times over the years, what remains the same is its continued importance both symbolically and physically to the San Francisco gay community. The Castro will continue to be "the" spot to meet GLBT people and their friends while being a beacon of diversity and hope for many around the globe. In the Castro individuals are free to be who they are regardless of social "norms," acting as catalyst for change and acceptance worldwide.

COMMENTARY: The last few weeks in the California marriage battles have been at once hopeful and painful. Castro community members look forward wondering what to expect next? First, we rode an ecstatic wave upward: Judge Vaughn Walker issued a powerful opinion striking down Proposition 8, and we celebrated in the streets both in the Castro and across the nation as couples made plans to get married across the state.
Then we rode downward when a three-judge panel of the U.S. court of appeals for the ninth circuit granted an indefinite stay of the decision - without explanation. Committed couples and their families, some of whom had begun making wedding plans, once again felt the pain of being denied not only a fundamental right but also the respect for and recognition of their love and commitment that only marriage offers...

Ike's Place, the wildly popular sandwich shop in the Castro District San Francisco, has hit on its best business promotion ever - eviction.
Facing a perfect storm of sandwich litigation - a 9:30 a.m. court appearance at Superior Court today and a possible eviction at 6:01 a.m. Wednesday - everyone seems to want to get their final secret sauce fix. More than 100 people were in line at 1 p.m. Monday, and owner Ike Shehadeh says they served a record 1,500 customers on Sunday. The Castro is more crowded than ever.
"It's still raining people," he said Monday. "I know we've said before that we don't block the sidewalk, but today we are...

WASHINGTON — President Obama rushed to the Oval Office when word arrived one night that militants with Al Qaeda in Yemen had been located and that the military wanted to support an attack by Yemeni forces. After a quick discussion, his counterterrorism adviser, John O. Brennan, told him the window to strike was closing. The Castro Community is keeping a close on Obama.
Visiting Baghdad in 2008 as a senator, Mr. Obama was given an aerial tour of the city by Gen. David H. Petraeus.
"I've got two minutes here," Mr. Brennan said.
"O.K.," the president said. "Go with this."
While Mr. Obama took three sometimes maddening months to decide to send more forces to Afghanistan, other decisions as commander in chief have come with dizzying speed, far less study and little public attention; although the Castro District residents are not completely convinced...

(Sacramento) The California State Senate passed a bill on Monday that would repeal a section of the California Welfare and Institutions code that instructs the State Department of Mental Health to conduct research into the "causes and cures of homosexuality," with the implication that lesbian, gay, and bisexual Californians are sexual deviants, potential sex offenders and a threat to children. The Castro District in San Francisco celebrated.
The bill, AB 2199, was passed in a unanimous 36-0 vote that included bipartisan support and is sponsored by Equality California and was introduced by Assembly member Bonnie Lowenthal (D-Long Beach).
Castro district residents agree, "It is outrageous that California law requires the state to expend scare resources in a futile attempt to 'cure' homosexuality," said Geoff Kors...
